Course Description
This course provides a foundational understanding of the fashion business that focuses on and emphasizes visual and retail merchandising principles. Students will explore online and in-store merchandising strategies and learn how to engage customers effectively. By examining the collaboration between merchandisers, fashion designers, and buyers, students gain insights into the creative world of fashion merchandising. Students learn about fashion merchandising by researching an existing brand to understand key concepts and best practices for successful merchandising strategies. Through research, analysis, and creative exercises and projects, students conceptualize and set the foundation to create their unique fashion brand and develop merchandising practices to enhance customer connectivity and drive sales.
NOTE: This course requires students to bring a modern computer laptop to class to complete course assignments. The New School provides all degree and credit-seeking students (enrolled in the current term) with subscriptions for the full Adobe Creative Cloud suite of applications.
Learner Outcomes
- Research different careers within fashion and fashion product merchandising, analyzing the various roles, responsibilities, and qualities that make merchandisers successful in their fields
- Demonstrate an understanding of how merchandisers work alongside and support designers, buyers, and other fashion and fashion product industry professionals
- Demonstrate an understanding of merchandising for different categories of fashion and fashion products, from brick-and-mortar to online retail, including the importance of built and digital environments, visual presentation, and visual merchandising to create a successful brand
- Research, analyze, and explore trends influential to different levels of the fashion pyramid from mass market to haute couture brands
- Research, analyze, and explore a brand's target market to understand customer wants and needs to direct merchandising strategies
- Demonstrate an understanding of customer engagement and the importance of sensory marketing through the organization, placement, and presentation of products in both online and retail environments
- Research and analyze brand development through the perspective of consumers and merchandisers to conceptualize and present the foundations for a new fashion brand with unique merchandising strategies
