Course Description
This course immerses students in the study of the human figure through drawing projects that investigate both its form and its capacity to carry meaning within various cultural contexts. Anatomy, motion, gesture, and a variety of techniques and media are used to explore the body as the site of messages ranging from the personal to the political.Learner Outcomes
- Demonstrate an applied understanding of visual elements such as line, gesture, values, planes, negative space, contour, composition, anatomy, clothing, and portraiture.
- Demonstrate a fast, expressive approach to mark making.
- Demonstrate an understanding of drawing the figure three-dimensionally.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the incremental drawing process - from gesture, to lines of construction, to contour, and values.
- Demonstrate a utilization of New York City as a laboratory of ideas and learning.
- Demonstrate an introduction to dry and wet media, using values.
- Demonstrate the ability to archive one's own process (sketches, proposals, written thoughts) as well as final products in the form of the Learning Portfolio.
- Demonstrate an understanding of editing final work for an Admissions Portfolio.
- Demonstrate an ability to evaluate works of art and the creative process through dialogue including group discussions, critiques, and written reflections.
- Demonstrate a consistent and professional work ethic and studio practice.
