Course Description
A survey of major theories and the critical literature on film from the 1920s to the present. Students develop an overall view of film theory and criticism with respect to the various modes of inquiry that have influenced the study of cinema.Learner Outcomes
- Theories of film including structuralism, semiotics, Marxism, psychoanalysis, feminism, race and ethnicity studies, postcolonial theory, queer theory, and cultural studies.
- Familiarity with key concepts in film studies including realism, montage, auteurism, genre, and star studies.
- Greater fluency in the communicative language of cinema and an ability to reflect critically and speak with confidence about a wide range of films.
Additional Information
- Refined writing and oral presentations skills.
- An appreciation for and understanding of film form and function, film history, and their theoretical frameworks.
- Students acquire skills to form their own impressions and responses to written and cinematic texts.
