Course Description

This course is an introduction to hospitality interior design for public spaces. Learn how to design communal spaces where guests socialize, dine, work, relax, play, and entertain. In this course, students build upon their hospitality education by designing a hotel lobby. Topics explore hotel interior design and vocabulary, hotel types, hotel branding, guest demographic, wellness, and sustainability. Discover hotel public space standards for space planning, materials, furnishings, and lighting. Prerequisites: Introduction to Hospitality Interior Design, or the equivalent.

Learner Outcomes

  • Overview of hospitality public space interior design including hotel vocabulary, current industry trends, and forecast
  • Explore hotel types, amenity spaces, brand strategy, and guest demographics
  • Learn the key phases and players on a hotel design project
  • Create a research-based boutique hotel concept based upon location and local culture
  • Gain skills in public space planning starting from bubble and blocking diagrams
  • Study public space design factors including circulation, scale, proportion, acoustics, and material durability
  • Design a boutique hotel lobby interior including the check-in process and amenity experience

Introduction to Hospitality Interior Design, InDesign, Hand-Drafting, CAD, or Revit, Sketchup
