Course Description

This course offers students an insider's look at the illustration industry. Students gain the tools necessary to illustrate professional-level assignments, while developing their own cohesive style. Students refine their interpretative and technical skills to define their projects in their desired media. The final creation can be a potential portfolio piece(s). Students can work with the traditional or digital tools of their choosing. Adobe Illustrator is welcome for assignments but will not be taught in the course. Prerequisite: Students should have basic drawing skills.

  • Learn the illustration process from the first sketch to the final draft
  • Understand composition
  • Explore traditional mixed media and digital rendering to capture the visual essence to develop a distinctive and personal illustrative style, from editorial to fantasy and beyond
  • Apply skills through a general assignment that can be expressed or geared in any illustration market
  • Execute a professional assignment from start to finish
  • Learn how to communicate a good, provoking idea through conceptualization
  • Build a knowledge base of illustration skills to spark creativity in other artistic mediums-
