Course Description

Drawing from intersectional, feminist and other critical theories (from within and outside of psychology), this course will examine seminal as well as cutting-edge theory, research and controversies related to psychology and sexuality. Using popular culture, empirical, clinical, and transnational examples, we take into consideration the intersectionality of race/ethnicity, class, disability, geographic location and immigration status in shaping individual and collective sexual psychologies. We will grapple with notions of what is "appropriate" or “normal” expressions of sexuality (now and throughout history), LGBTQIA+ psychologies, as we all the ever-increasing intersection of technology and sexuality (e.g., mobile dating, online sex work). We unpack how powerful socio-cultural categories and institutions (such as heterosexuality, race, ethnicity, ability, body size, reproductivity, age, and socioeconomic status) shape what sexuality is and means, and how it is experienced.
