Course Description

This course examines American film and television during the 1960s from a cultural and industrial perspective, with attention paid to visual and narrative style, as well as genre conventions that distinguish the period.

Learner Outcomes

  • How economic and creative changes taking place in the entertainment industry were unique to the era.
  • Knowledge of the Production Code; the demise of the classic studio system; the convergence between movies and broadcasting; the impact of sociopolitical issues; and the power of the “counter culture.”
  • Characteristics and influence of the rock-n- roll concert film, Cold War espionage, the television variety show, and the family melodrama.
