Course Description

Biodesign is a creative interdisciplinary approach with a goal of tackling complex global challenges. In this course, students will learn about cutting-edge biotechnologies, ethical applications, and intricate relationships between elements within living systems.

This course will explore the range of methods and practices of this rapidly growing field which is spreading into and transforming every aspect of our lives. In this course, students will gain the vocabulary and skills they need to create a more equitable and environmentally just future.

Course Length - Online 5 weeks

Learner Outcomes

  • Gain a basic critical understanding of some of the most cutting-edge biotechnologies (e.g. synthetic biology and gene editing) and pressing issues (e.g. climate change and mass extinction)
  • Apply biotech thoughtfully and ethically while critically thinking through the implications of designed things
  • Gain awareness on the interrelationships and interdependence within and between living systems
  • Develop a vocabulary, literacy, and facility of communication in biodesign, biology, biotechnology, and scientific inquiry while learning to appreciate the diverse cultural perspectives on these topics
  • Leverage speculative/futuring methods in creating and imagining equitable, inclusive, accessible, and environmentally and socially just possibilities and propositions to biotech and bio-based interventions
