Course Description

This course is an immersive introductory exploration of art and design practices in ceramic processes. Students are introduced to handbuilding techniques (slab, coil, and pinch construction), molded components, wheel throwing, and glazes. As students advance their skills and knowledge of the craft, independent explorations of both sculptural and functional applications are encouraged and supported in the expression of individual art and design aesthetics.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of varieties of clay bodies and material compositions, including extraction processes and current and potential recycling methods.

  • Explore and demonstrate an understanding of hand-building techniques, including coil, slab, and throwing.

  • Explore and demonstrate an understanding of simple 2-part mold-making and casting techniques.

  • Leverage digital technologies such as the laser-cutter to create templates for the extruder.

  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of glaze composition, chemistry and mixing, and common glazing practices, such as brushing, dipping, and spraying.
