Course Description

Introduces the fundamentals of telling true stories in words and pictures, from single images to multi-panel strips. Students will become acquainted with the tools and terminology of the field. Quick bootcamp-style exercises will build an immersive environment to quickly and comfortably acclimate.

  • Approaches to engaging and perceptive autobiography
  • The symbolic language of cartooning
  • Introduction to visual narrative structure and character design, the building blocks of storytelling
  • The essence of layout and page and panel design, unlocking rhythm and timing in visual storytelling
  • Basics of lettering and text design
  • Learn the value of “show, don’t tell”
  • Overview of the tools of the trade, both digital and analog
