Course Description

New York’s urban landscapes offer inspiration as students develop their skills in documentary and fine art photography. Beginners master basic skills in analog and digital photography, while experienced students learn to convey ideas and explore themes in their work. The class includes on-site shoots, lab work, critiques, and lectures. All work is done in black and white. Students must have a 35mm camera with manual settings and a DSLR or mirrorless digital camera.

NOTE: This course requires students to bring a modern computer laptop to class to complete course assignments outside of scheduled computer lab times. The New School provides all degree and credit-seeking students (enrolled in the current term) with subscriptions for the full Adobe Creative Cloud suite of applications.

Learner Outcomes

  • Gain proficiency in using analog cameras and digital capture
  • Develop an understanding of traditional black and white printing and darkroom processes
  • Gain and demonstrate an understanding of digital tools and color management from capture to print
  • Acquire the ability to use the aforementioned technical skills to develop and support conceptual ideas
  • Demonstrate and understanding of t formal art and design principles such as composition, perspective, line, value, color, scale, light, and time
  • Acquire expanded knowledge of the history of the photographic medium through study and discussion of processes and artists
  • Develop a critical vocabulary to discuss and describe works of art
  • Create a portfolio of challenging and meaningful work through a series of self-directed projects
