Course Description

Latin is a simple language with a complex family history. As the origin of Spanish, French, and Italian, and the source of most English words, knowledge of Latin has practical benefits for the study of language and literature. This course, for beginning and advanced students, is designed to efficiently apply these benefits. We will study the historical development of Latin into the Romance languages, and the history of Latin’s influence on English. Beginners will learn Latin quickly and painlessly from the simplest selections of authors such as Ovid, the Vulgate Bible, and the Carmina Burana. Advanced students will broaden their knowledge with writings from, among others, Plautus, Spinoza, and Pope Francis.
