Movements in World Cinema 2

Course Description

This course surveys key cultural, technological, and social developments in cinema of the last 50 years, from post-World War II Italian Neorealism and the French New Wave (Nouvelle Vague) to the rise of digital cinema at the end of the 20th century. Considering a variety of industry practices, including the evolution of American cinema from the studio system and beyond, the emphasis will be on film traditions including those of Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Topics to include the impact of colonialism, global relationships and social inequities, on the development of neorealism (with its use of locations and amateurs and its hybrid of fiction and documentary); Third Cinema in Latin America and beyond; the rise of the "auteur" and the idea of film as a form of individual expression. The development of political cinema and the uses and distribution of film and film funding will also be addressed. Note: This course may be taken independently of Movements in World Cinema 1.
