Our Favorite Moments From President McBride's Investiture

Dr. Dwight A. McBride started his term as the ninth president of The New School in April 2020 - at the height of the pandemic and in a time of transition for universities around the world. One year and a half later, The New School held his official investiture in an in-person, live-streamed ceremony. Read on for some of our favorite moments.

1. When students from the School of Jazz performed

Nicholas Augusta, Colson Jimenez, and Gary Jones III played their version of the classic "Lovely Day." After the music, faculty members and colleagues reflected on President McBride's accomplishments, including Professor Darrick Hamilton who praised his "integrity, generosity, and humanistic spirit."

2. When Rutgers President Dr. Jonathan Holloway joked about referring to President McBride only as "Dwight"

Holloway described President McBride as an independent actor who continues to set new standards for institutions, noting McBride's pledge of $100,000 to the Student Emergency Assistance Program in the midst of the pandemic.

3. When President McBride held up the charters and the founder's medal

Before presenting President McBride with the items that symbolized the history behind his new role, Board Chair Linda Rappaport summed up the audience sentiment when she said: "We have waited 18 months for this moment."

4. When President McBride gave his tearful acceptance speech

"I’m humbled by this marvelous occasion," President McBride said. He noted recent strides toward diversity and inclusion, such as the launch of the EISJ Office, but acknowledged that "we have work to do to create a more inclusive community."

President McBride also emphasized supporting students and elevating the institution in the community. "When your local community is Greenwich Village and your hometown is New York City, your name and the street resounds with global reach."

Focusing on the future of the The New School, he honored the university as "a place that always embraces the possibility of the new."
