About This Program

Explore architecture and interior design or industrial design in a rigorous hands-on, studio-based program. You'll be immersed in spatial and experiential design studies as you develop projects suitable for application to a graduate design program. This five-week program introduces students to an iterative design process, manual and digital representation and making, methods of design research, and contextual history and theory. New York City is an extension of your studio classroom, and you'll engage with the built environment through visits to galleries and firms. In keeping with the progressive mission of The New School and Parsons, this program emphasizes ecological and social responsibility in architecture and design.

What You’ll Gain

  • Skills in drawing, digital representation, and fabrication
  • Exposure to design practices in New York City
  • Experience with an iterative and creative design process
  • Understanding of the impact of designers at scales ranging from architecture and interiors to product and industrial design
  • Preparation for admission to interior design, lighting design, architecture, and industrial design degree programs
  • Awareness of the built environment's ecological and social impact

How You’ll Learn

  • Small classes with an atelier atmosphere, providing a collegial context for professional and pre-professional education in architecture
  • Individualized critiques from expert faculty practitioners in an urban setting where the city becomes an extension of the classroom and the basis for gaining a deeper understanding of the built environment

Students attend classes Monday through Friday for seven hours per day. Classes run from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a one-hour lunch break. Attendance is mandatory for all participants. Students who miss more than two classes will fail the course, subject to faculty and administrative review. Students who do not meet course expectations may be asked to leave the program. Out-of-class work, assigned each day, is a substantial part of the program.

Application Deadline: Applications will be due in June 2021.

Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications are accepted in the order in which they are received. Because class sizes are limited and most courses fill before session deadlines, early application is strongly encouraged. (Conditionally accepted School of Constructed Environments graduate students should email summer@newschool.edu for registration instructions.)

Tuition and Fees: $5,062 + fees. Full payment is required at the time of registration.

Payment Methods

Online Registration: Pay by credit card. Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express are accepted.

Note: Credit and debit cards often have limits on how much can be charged. Your bank may deny approval for a credit card payment if the card is issued by a non-U.S. bank. To ensure a smooth registration process, please check with your bank before submitting your credit card information.

Students who registered online should withdraw using the online registration system. Students who registered by mail or in person must submit a withdrawal request in writing. To qualify for a refund of tuition, students must submit all withdrawal requests before the deadlines. Refund processing takes approximately four weeks.
