Course Description

In this course, students are introduced to the art and design studio practice. Students intermix art materials and found objects as they explore the basics of 2D and 3D art and design. Fun and challenging projects, including STEAM-focused projects, encompass a spectrum of media, including drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, and sculpture. This foundational course emphasizes creative thinking and is for students who possess a wide range of skill sets. Absolute beginners are welcome!

Learner Outcomes

  • Gain confidence in their work and in their identity as a young artist/designer
  • Learn to take risks and step outside of their comfort zone
  • Become more knowledgeable about making materials beyond traditional pen/marker and paper
  • Collect their own ideas in a sketchbook and translate smaller ideas into larger projects
  • Explore creative projects with interdisciplinary connections to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM)
  • Complete projects and take pride in their work by preserving it carefully for class presentations, exhibitions, and future portfolios
  • Demonstrate an understanding of an art/design studio practice by participating in a variety of activities, including lectures, demos, and discussions; individual and collaborative exercises and projects; and self and peer critiques
