Course Description

This hands-on design strategies course introduces students to an overview of the evolving fashion industry viewed as a dynamic creative system, including design, sourcing, manufacturing, promotion, merchandising and retailing, and consumption, emphasizing its impact on contemporary societal issues and change. Students meet online 4 days per week over a 4 week period with Parsons faculty and an international cohort of peers for real-time instruction, project guidance, and group and individual critiques. Live instruction is supplemented with digitally archived project support and reference resources. This exploratory design strategies course incorporates structured “away time” from the computer in which students investigate world events, social issues, and personal experiences and interests as a springboard for creative inspiration, direction, and project development. Students learn the fundamentals of existing and emerging fashion industries and movements, their roles within these fashion systems, fashion’s impact on society, and how they may express their ideas for future fashion systems. Digital tools, including the Adobe Creative Cloud, are introduced. The four-week experience includes guest speakers from industry and virtual field trips. From the start of the course, students keep an online journal to document their research and creative processes. Students will participate in individual and collaborative design strategy exercises to inform their design and presentation of an innovative idea or approach to a fashion system issue, such as product development, sourcing, marketing and PR, systems design, and-or creative service.
