Course Description

In this introduction to visual communication concepts and tools, you learn the fundamentals of typography, graphic design, and layout, as well as digital skills. Taught by two instructors, the class includes basic design and type exercises using Photoshop and Illustrator. Develop the essential design skills you need to produce graphics for print, advertising, corporate identity, and other media. Prerequisites: none

Learner Outcomes

  • How to produce a portfolio-level branding project including a logo (icon/logo), typographic menu and color scheme—applied to a business card, poster series, brochure, and website (monitor, tablet, phone) home page and then to a presentation of the entire project as a portfolio piece

  • Follow a systematic design process that insures maximum creativity and produces solutions that hit the mark and meet the deadline (and in the real world, come in on budget)
  • Handle the critique process and both learn and gain confidence from it.
  • Understand the three basic programs in Adobe Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign) and how to use the right program (tool) for the right job, and how to use them in combination.
  • Know how to use the many resources available to find illustrators, photographers, retouchers, letterers, stock art, typography, PANTONE color books, web developers and other web-based resources
  • Understand how graphic designers work with color both in print and digitally
  • Understand basics of typography and how to work with it in your projects
  • Understand the production requirements and constraints of projects in various media
